How does a gfci outlet work.
Garage door opener keeps tripping gfci.
There is a garage door opener gdo plugged into the only outlet downstream from the gfci.
Opener is about 15 years old but functions perfectly gfib not a receptacle but a breaker that goes into the service panel is new but just recently hooked up.
The breaker trips as soon as the garage door opener is plugged in.
It doesn t trip the breaker just the gfci.
They do not say why the note is there.
If you gfci keeps tripping that means there is an underlying problem that needs to be addressed immediately.
It has been working fine for the past few years but now the gdo trips the gfci whenever it s plugged in.
I d advise a temporary test using an extension cord plugged into a known different circuit to plug in the garage door opener in to for 2 or 3 days and see if the gfi breaker continues to trip after the opener has been removed from the circuit.
If you look at the operation and maintenance manual you will see a slightly ominous note in general troubleshooting opener does not run that reads check for a non compatible gfci.
A gfci that is continually tripping is not working properly and exposes you and your home to the risk of electrical shock or fire from an overloaded circuit.
Never gets to the point to where the motor operates.
A licensed electrician must replace non compatible gfci s.
The gfib was bought 8 years ago and not used until now.
